MS SQL: Named Instance on Windows 2003 Cluster

I was installing a SQL Server Named Instance on a Windows 2003 Cluster but the installation failed with error:

The cluster resource failed to come online. If extended error information was reported by the clustering service it can be obtained from the event log.

This happens because Windows 2003 blocks TCP/IP functionality for named instances that are not running SQL Server SP3 or later, a workaround is available adding a Named Pipes Alias in the Network Library Configuration using Cliconfg.exe.
